1. NaNoWriMo Survival Guide: Take the Time to Know Your Characters

This month, we’re taking the SURVIVAL acronym from a wilderness survival guide, and using it to lead you through the depths of the forests, lakes, and crags of your writing journey. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke from Chick Lit Is Not Dead tackle ‘U’ — Use All Your Senses, Undue Haste Makes Waste:

    • S – Size Up the Situation
    • U – Use All Your Senses, Undue Haste Makes Waste
    • R – Remember Where You Are
    • V – Vanquish Fear and Panic
    • I – Improvise
    • V – Value Living
    • A – Act Like the Natives
    • L – Live by Your Wits, But for Now, Learn Basic Skills

They say two heads are better than one. And in our case, we must agree! You see, even though we went to the same high school and college, have names that sound similar and write identical narratives, our writing process could not be more different. And while that difference may have caused some pretty major girlfights early on„ it’s now something we celebrate. (Well, most of the time anyway…)

  2. "I don’t know where people got the idea that characters in books are supposed to be likable. Books are not in the business of creating merely likable characters with whom you can have some simple identification. Books are in the business of creating great stories that make your brain go all like ahhbdgbdmerhbergurhbudgerbudbaaah."

Maybe not so much at this very moment, but I anticipate feeling this way later this month…

  4. "All worthy work is open to interpretations the author did not intend. Art isn’t your pet — it’s your kid. It grows up and talks back to you."

Same thing with writing too! Sadly I haven’t been so good at writing when I don’t feel like it.

Know them. Love them.

Amen.

I remember reading this right before reading the 5th Frank Herbert Dune novel. The thing I noticed most was number 3 — Herbert used “said”, if he used anything at all.
As for #4, I got dinged for that when I submitted my novel the first time around.
And #8 is the pitfall of the fanfic writer. And Laurell K. Hamilton. (Sorry, Laurell, but it’s true.)

  7. Fish

I have a webcomic project in the works while I try to put together my second book. It’s a little procrastination, a little stress, just one big giant OOF. It feels like writing’s at such a stand-still because of all this craziness of wedding planning and just being slapped by the giant fish of life…

    Wow, that’s an image.

But seriously, I have a webcomic I’m putting together that I’m super excited about. Hope to get some done while I’m camping. Once it’s ready it’ll be cross-posting to here too! So to bed now, fun times later.

  8. It’s time to finally get down to business of publishing. And I’m serious this time: I’m starting my search with local publishers!
Prayers and good thoughts are much appreciated!
